Digital Media Expert

I was born in Albany, NY in 1968 and currently reside in Seattle with my wife, daughter and son. Every professional position I have ever had has primarily involved the internet. I am passionate about digital media and my constant thirst to learn puts me at the center of the new media universe.

Over the years I have held positions as a writer, designer, HTML editor, art director, executive producer and eventually as entrepreneur running my own companies and supervising dozens of employees.

Before the world wide web, there was telnet, gopher and usenet. I was publishing medical research online to the US Congress before HTTP was even born and creating virtual advertising characters for CBS TV when web browsers had an unchangeable gray default background. I produced the first live broadcast from the basecamp of Mt. Everest last century.

Before beginning to work for myself over a decade ago I worked for the 3M Corporation, Whole Earth Catalog and one of the first U.S. web design agencies, Free Range Media.

3M Health Information Systems in Wallingford, CT creates software for hospitals. I was hired in 1990 as a graphic designer to create printed manuals and presentation materials. I was given an email account and was taught FTP, Telnet, vi and troff. I spent part of each week updating our GOPHER site with news of our software development progress.

After learning tons about the Internet and about design, I sold everything I owned except for my car, futon and computer. I moved out to San Francisco and showed up at the doorstep of the Whole Earth Catalog, begging for a job. After two months of this, they realized I wasn't going away and gave me a job. For twenty years, Whole Earth had published magazines and catalogs using traditional paste-up techniques and I joined the team doing the first desktop-published magazines. A great mentor of mine, Howard Rheingold, was the editor-in-chief and he handed me a floppy disk containing the Mosaic browser. I was blown away and helped to create Whole Earth's first website. Whole Earth created The Well, Whole Earth 'Lectronic Link, which became one of the first great online communities. In the early 90s, I was often called upon to walk over to the server room and reboot the mainframe because I was the skinny kid who could squeeze between the wall and computer to press the hard reset button.

After publishing the 400-page catalog, the Whole Earth team scattered and I ended up in Seattle working for Free Range Media. As one of the first large web design agencies in the world, we developed tons of the first corporate websites on the Internet. We created the first Baywatch TV show website, the first NFL website and sites for CBS, Zenith and a bunch of banks. We also created a huge online children's playground called FreeZone. In those days the changes were hitting daily, every morning at work would find us huddled around a computer saying, "Wow. Have you seen this site?"

In 1995 I co-founded a company called MediaZones with the intention of developing dozens of online "zones" which today are called communities or social networks. Our first zone was called MountainZone.com, an online hangout for outdoor sports enthusiasts. It was so successful that we abandoned our attempts at other zones so we could focus on the millions of visitors arriving at MountainZone. We teamed up with Vans Shoes, Warren Miller Entertainment and scores of independent writers and photographers. We eventually sold to a public company called Quokka Sports just months before the big dot com crash. After working for Quokka for a few months (flying back and forth between San Francisco and Seattle) I left to take some time off with my family.

In 2001 I joined up with some fellow start-up junkies to get The Lux Group, Inc. rolling. For almost six years we produced cutting-edge digital projects for clients all over the world. We engaged in 2 to 3 month projects for clients building websites, printed materials, intranets and interactive kiosks. We were a trusted keeper of our client's information, content and data.
